Bone Health
(Original post from October 20, 2018)
Today is World Osteoporosis Day, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of bone health in order to reduce the risk of people developing osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a bone disease, which causes bones to lose strength and density, ultimately making bones weaker, thinner and more fragile. While it more commonly affects older adults, it can occur in people of any age, especially women. Osteoporosis generally affects the spine, hips, ribs and wrists, and is often under-diagnosed, going unnoticed until a break or fracture occurs.
Without appropriate support, osteoporosis can worsen, causing bones to get thinner and weaker, increasing the risk of bone breaks and fractures from something as mild as walking, a fall or a strong sneeze.
Preventative measures can be taken to maintain bone integrity and include factors such as diet, supplementation and exercise. Consuming foods high in calcium, such as dairy products, green leafy vegetables, oily fish, tofu, almonds and good quality calcium supplements, in addition to increasing your vitamin D & K2 intake either through exposure to sunlight, diet, or supplementation, are excellent ways you can decrease the risk of developing osteoporosis. The best types of exercise for maintaining bone health include weight-bearing exercises such as walking and jogging, and strength training such as weight lifting.
