Reducing Risk Factors for Prostate Cancer

While there’s no absolute to prostate cancer prevention, there is evidence to suggest that taking steps to improve your health may possibly reduce the risk of developing it.

Here are a few ways you can improve your health and reduce your risk.

Diet:

Think about nourishing your body by eating foods that are nutritious. Start with fresh foods, reducing or removing highly processed foods and limiting alcohol consumption. Choose whole grains over highly processed carbohydrates, skip sugary drinks and opt for water, tea or coffee and choose good fats over bad. When considering your diet, remember, what is good for the heart is also good for the prostate.

Physical exercise:

Evidence has shown regular exercise to be a protective factor against prostate cancer. Aim to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day.

Stop smoking:

Cigarette smoking may increase the risk of prostate cancer by affecting circulating hormone levels and through exposure to carcinogens. Cigarette smoking may be associated with an increased risk of developing prostate cancer, while smoking cessation may reduce the risk.

Maintain a healthy weight:

Ensuring you maintain a healthy weight may be a protective factor against prostate cancer. Studies have found obese men have to have a higher rate of prostate cancer-related death than non-obese men. Obesity may also increase the risk of prostate cancer progression.
