Perimenopausal Treatment Programme
BY THE HOLLAND CLINIC
If you have found your way to this page, you are understandably interested in what is happening to your body at the moment and are looking for answers. Perhaps you are suffering from symptoms and would like to do something about them?
We want you to know that we understand your symptoms, inside and out, and have the answers you need.
And we would love to help you.
Did you know that if you are aged 35 to 55 and suffering from random and unexplained health issues, you are most likely in perimenopause? Maybe you have suspected this for a while, or maybe this will come as a surprise.
When we think about perimenopause, most of us would focus on what is happening with our menstrual cycle. Often, there are changes to our period, such as a heavier or lighter flow, longer or shorter cycles, or increased menstrual cramps.
However, perimenopause can have a significant impact on many other aspects of our lives.
SYMPTOMS
-
Have you gained weight, particularly around the middle section, without changes to your eating or exercise levels?
-
Do you struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep? Do you feel exhausted during the day?
-
Are you suffering from anxiety, depression or sudden mood changes? Are you experiencing memory issues and “brain fog”?
-
Do you feel sudden waves of intense heat radiating through your body? Have you woken covered in sweat at night?
-
Have you experienced vaginal dryness, pain during sex or changes to your libido?
-
Have you recently begun suffering from a range of other symptoms such as headaches, migraines, breast pain, or more severe aches, pains or allergies?
Many of these symptoms may feel coincidental or unrelated to your menstrual changes, or may be “explained away” due to our busy lifestyles and chaotic schedules. But at The Holland Clinic, we know perimenopause is the root cause.
Unfortunately for most of us, the perimenopausal phase won’t be a short, fleeting time: symptoms can last for many years and for some, more than a decade. Some women may experience a small number of symptoms, others may suffer a wide range at various times.
We want you to know that you do not need to endure or “just get through” this perimenopausal phase. Instead, we want you to flourish and be full of vitality. We want you to feel supported. We want to treat your symptoms. We would like you to see results as quickly as possible, but we also want to set you up for the long-term with a lasting, sustainable approach.
Drawing on more than 22 years of research and clinical experience, we are proud to say that we have created a programme that will provide all of this for you: our ‘Perimenopausal Treatment Programme’
DR KIRSTEY HOLLAND
THE HOLLAND CLINIC
The Perimenopausal Treatment Programme
The Perimenopausal Treatment Programme is a 12-week course of sessions at our practice, The Holland Clinic, located in Brunswick, Victoria. The programme is designed to give you a powerful intervention while providing you with the support you need to live and thrive through perimenopause and beyond. Our approach is extremely holistic and reflects the multi-modality approach of our founder and principal practitioner, Dr Kirstey Holland. We combine acupuncture, traditional Chinese herbal medicine, dietary and lifestyle advice and supplementation in our programme, and utilise results of functional and muscle testing to tailor our approach. We do not simply focus on treating symptoms: this is a comprehensive and individualised programme that will support your mind, body and brain using quality research and evidence-based practice.
What we do
BALANCING YOUR HORMONES
We undertake extensive functional testing in order to establish the root cause of symptoms
We use one of the most comprehensive functional tests in medicine known as the DUTCH test (Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones)
Results inform the individualised tailoring of your treatment programme
Your progesterone, estrogen, testosterone and adrenal hormones are balanced via hormonal therapy and supplementation
Levels and metabolism rates of melatonin and a number of organic acids are also examined
MANAGING YOUR WEIGHT
A full gut analysis is undertaken, revealing the health of your gastrointestinal tract and microbiome.
Imbalances within this system are addressed and any identified conditions are treated, such as estrogen domination which can lead to fluid retention and weight gain.
We aim to reduce cortisol levels flooding the brain. Cortisol is the stress hormone and when levels increase, the cells of our body can become resistant to insulin and in turn, this may lead to an increase in blood sugar and therefore weight gain.
We identify foods that trigger reactions and symptoms in our patients. Triggers could include foods such as wheat, dairy or sugars, and vary from patient to patient. These triggers cause inflammation and damage to our gastrointestinal tract, allowing proteins to escape (known as “leaky gut” syndrome). The proteins can cause reactions that attack our joints, brain and other parts of the body, resulting in chronic inflammation and pain. This inflammation can interfere with weight management.
We look at utilising the valuable tools of intermittent fasting and time-restricted eating, if deemed appropriate for the patient. To support this practice, we flood the system with a nutrient-dense blood supply and more than enough food to keep you satiated.
We encourage our patients to include our specially developed range of “ketogenic” beverages during their fasts to help with feeling full and energised.
RESTORING YOUR SLEEP
For those who have been experiencing chronic insomnia or sleep disturbances, we examine a range of functions that contribute to sleep, such as your circadian rhythm and adrenal activity, as well as levels of melatonin and cortisol in your system. The relationship between these factors is crucial to good sleep patterns.
We focus on potential emotional factors that could be causing underlying stress and anxiety, exacerbating insomnia. It is imperative that your environment is fully supportive of sleep. We discuss and focus on the potential triggers for insomnia, to restore peace, balance and harmony to the body.
STABILISING YOUR MOOD

We examine the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, the “feel-good” hormone, in the gastrointestinal tract. Up to 80% of our feel-good neurotransmitters are produced in the gut, therefore by supporting this balance we are positively influencing the way we feel, think and behave.
There is strong research evidence showing that stress impacts our gastrointestinal tract negatively, revealing the importance of decreasing known stressors and balancing cortisol levels in our system. We can achieve this through acupuncture, breath work, mediation, mindfulness, supplementation, and the modification of lifestyle and dietary factors.
LONG TERM RISKS
We know you do not want to experience negative perimenopausal symptoms for extended periods of time, but it is important to know that there are long term consequences for not responding to and treating these symptoms promptly. Research has shown that symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats can be a marker for future cardiovascular risk. Similarly, it has been shown that lowered estrogen levels can impact bone density as well as brain and heart health. Excess weight around the middle section increases your risk of heart disease and diabetes. Perimenopause symptoms should not be taken lightly as they can have quite detrimental long term health effects.
